Health2Innovation: Driving Digital Health Innovation through Mobile Learning and Cybersecurity

The healthcare sector is rapidly evolving through digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and data-driven innovation, creating a growing demand for professionals with advanced digital skills. The Health2Innovation project addresses this need by bringing together universities, businesses, and innovation ecosystems to bridge the gap between higher education and industry. Through an innovative learning ecosystem—including a Digital Learning Hub and its accompanying mobile application, specialised training, innovation bootcamps, and apprenticeship opportunities—the project equips students and graduates with the knowledge, practical experience, and entrepreneurial skills required to succeed in the digital healthcare sector.

VASS EU Services’ Technical Contribution

As a technical partner in the consortium, VASS EU Services played a dual role by contributing both in software development for mobile devices and specialised cybersecurity expertise.

One of our main contributions was the development of the Health2Innovation Mobile Application, extending the functionality of the Digital Learning Hub to smartphones and tablets on both Android and iOS platforms.

The mobile application was designed to create a more engaging and accessible learning experience. Users can create personalised profiles, including their location, professional information, and profile picture, while students can showcase their skills and indicate their proficiency levels. At the same time, mentors and companies can specify the skills they are looking for, enabling more targeted collaboration opportunities.

A key feature of the application is its full integration and functionality of the intelligent matchmaking functionality, already present in the Digital Learning Hub, which connects students with mentors based on complementary skills and interests. Once matched, users can communicate directly through an integrated chat system, encouraging networking, knowledge exchange, and mentorship throughout the learning journey.

In addition, the application provides seamless access to the Digital Learning Hub’s online library, allowing users to search, browse, and access educational resources anytime and anywhere.

Bringing Cybersecurity Expertise into Education

Beyond software development, the project presented VASS EU Services with an exciting opportunity to transform years of practical cybersecurity expertise into educational material.

Our cybersecurity specialists collaborated closely to design a dedicated learning module titled Healthcare Information Security, which is now part of the Health2Innovation curriculum and available through the Digital Learning Hub.

The training programme consists of three courses covering key aspects of cybersecurity in healthcare. The first course explores common cyber threats, malware, IoT and medical device vulnerabilities, as well as the opportunities and risks associated with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). The second course introduces core security principles, firewalls, encryption, and Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) for protecting healthcare systems. Lastly, the third course presents the main cybersecurity standards and regulations, including the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, ISO/IEC 27001, Control Objectives for Information and Related Technology (COBIT), GDPR, and HIPAA.

Developing this educational content was a valuable learning experience for our team. It required translating technical concepts into accessible, engaging learning material that could support students from diverse academic backgrounds while maintaining technical accuracy and real-world relevance.

Lessons Learned

Health2Innovation demonstrated the value of strong collaboration between academia and industry. Working alongside universities, innovation hubs, and businesses from across Europe enabled partners to exchange knowledge, understand different educational approaches, and jointly develop practical learning solutions that respond to real market needs.

One of the project’s key insights was that digital health education is most effective when technical knowledge is combined with practical skills, entrepreneurship, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Equally important was the recognition that the effective use of cybersecurity principles is an integral part of healthcare education, as digital health solutions continue to expand and manage increasingly sensitive patient and business data.

For VASS EU Services, participating in Health2Innovation also strengthened our ability to communicate complex technological expertise in an educational context, opening new opportunities for future collaboration in European innovation and research projects.

Looking Ahead

The digital transformation of healthcare will continue to accelerate, creating increasing demand for professionals with expertise in digital health, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, sustainability, and innovation.

Projects such as Health2Innovation demonstrate how European collaboration can successfully prepare the next generation of healthcare innovators by connecting education with industry needs and creating learning environments that extend beyond the traditional classroom.

As one of VASS EU Services’ first participations in an Erasmus+ innovation project, Health2Innovation has been a rewarding journey. Through close collaboration with partners from countries such as Portugal, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Lithuania, France, Sweden, and Romania, we gained valuable insights into different innovation ecosystems and witnessed first-hand how universities and businesses can work together to shape the future of healthcare education.
