What Makes Digital Health Education Effective? Lessons from the Health2Innovation Pilot Experience

Healthcare systems across Europe are undergoing rapid transformation. Digital technologies, artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, cybersecurity, sustainability, and innovation management are becoming essential competencies for healthcare professionals, researchers, entrepreneurs, and students. However, traditional educational programmes often struggle to keep pace with these developments.
The Health2Innovation project was created to address this challenge by developing an innovative learning ecosystem that combines digital health, entrepreneurship, and innovation skills. Through a series of specialised training modules and an online learning platform, the project aimed to equip learners with the knowledge and competencies needed to contribute to the future of healthcare innovation.
But how do learners actually perceive such training? What makes digital health education effective? And what lessons can be learned for future skills development initiatives?
The pilot testing phase of Health2Innovation provides valuable insights.
Testing 12 Modules Across Europe
As part of the project’s quality assurance process, 12 learning modules covering topics such as Digital Literacy for Healthcare, Healthcare Entrepreneurship, Leadership, Sustainability, Healthcare Information Security, Funding Opportunities, and Regulatory Compliance were piloted with participants from multiple European countries.
A total of 270 participants and 8 trainers evaluated the modules, assessing their relevance, clarity, interactivity, technical usability, learning outcomes, and overall satisfaction.
The results demonstrated a strong overall acceptance of the Health2Innovation training system. Most ratings exceeded 8 out of 10, while all modules received positive evaluations across all quality dimensions.
Importantly, more than 75% of all participant responses fell within the three highest rating categories, indicating a consistently positive learning experience.
What Learners Valued Most
One of the most interesting findings was that participants particularly appreciated modules that complemented their existing studies and provided practical knowledge not typically available in traditional educational programmes.
Among all modules, Healthcare Entrepreneurship, Leadership, and Funding Opportunities achieved some of the highest levels of overall satisfaction and recommendation.
This suggests that learners increasingly recognise the importance of entrepreneurial and innovation-related competencies in healthcare. Technical expertise alone is no longer sufficient. Future healthcare professionals also need skills related to leadership, opportunity recognition, funding acquisition, stakeholder engagement, and innovation management.
Participants repeatedly highlighted the practical relevance of these topics and their direct applicability to real-world challenges.
The Importance of Flexibility and Accessibility
Another major success factor was the flexibility of the learning format.
Participants appreciated the possibility of learning at their own pace, accessing materials online, and combining different learning resources such as videos, readings, quizzes, and practical exercises.
Interestingly, the evaluation showed only minor differences between online and face-to-face delivery formats. Satisfaction levels remained high regardless of the mode of delivery, demonstrating that well-designed digital learning experiences can be highly effective.
The blended learning approach received the highest ratings overall, suggesting that combining online resources with interactive live sessions may provide the most effective educational model for future digital health training programmes.
What Can Be Improved?
While the overall feedback was overwhelmingly positive, participants also provided valuable recommendations for improvement.
One recurring theme was the desire for greater interactivity. Learners expressed interest in more real-life case studies, hands-on exercises, practical examples, and opportunities to apply knowledge directly to realistic healthcare innovation scenarios.
Another frequently mentioned point concerned the balance between automation and human interaction. Some participants felt that AI-generated voices used in learning materials lacked a personal touch and suggested incorporating more human presence in video content and presentations.
Several participants also proposed introducing AI-powered support functions, such as intelligent chat assistants that could answer questions while learners progress through the course.
These suggestions reflect broader trends in digital education, where learners increasingly expect personalised, interactive, and adaptive learning experiences.
Beyond Knowledge: Building Confidence and Innovation Mindsets
One particularly encouraging outcome was that the modules helped participants gain confidence in areas outside their traditional expertise.
For example, several learners with technical backgrounds reported that entrepreneurship initially seemed unfamiliar or intimidating. After completing the modules, they felt more capable of understanding how healthcare innovations can be transformed into viable projects, services, or businesses.
This highlights one of the most important achievements of Health2Innovation: fostering interdisciplinary thinking.
